I seem to collect builders and writers because, well, I'm a creative compulsive myself. Before I joined SL, I was used to creative compatriots disappearing for chunks of time. Certainly I've had to train my friends to not take my own disappearances personally. However, builders are another breed. Until I let four hours go by simply decorating my skybox, I didn't quite understand.

The creative process can be all-consuming, but adding the element of 3D modeling adds the geek thing that has its own all-consuming nature. I know this from having worked on websites, hand-coding html at one time, but even that is nothing compared to the goal of creating workable environments that avatars will use.

Because I'm a highly social multi-tasker, it took losing though four hours with ease to better understand a builder's ambivalence when it comes to dealing with other people, especially if they really want contact with other people. Additionally, I've observed the challenges two dear friends of mine have, one of whom is a builder, the other not -- hearing both sides of their frustration.

Building on SL is one of the most seductive activities of residents, and for good reason. The results, when they work, are astounding in their beauty and elegance. Great builders make magick.

As a lover of creative magick, it makes sense that I would be drawn to builders, but damn, they can be infuriating -- and completely unaware they are being so infuriating. Better understanding their compulsion should help, but it doesn't. Oh well, it's a frustration I'm happy to feel in exchange for the wonderful relationships I have with extraordinary builders.

When I first logged on to SL, I sought a community of like- minded people who enjoy exploring the metaphysical. I'm comfortable with a few symbolic languages (astrology, tarot, etc.). The Mystic Academy offers readings, classes and social activities, which I found appealing. I made the cave underneath the beautiful built my home.

I met some amazing people -- yes people, not just dragons, fairies or playboy bunny types -- with great wisdom and knowledge. They taught me a great deal about SL in such a way, my vision of its potential has expanded beyond a single community.

Communities are like relationships. Some are healthier than others. I didn't breakup with the Mystic Academy, but the nature of relationship had changed. At the same time, many of my professional and personal relationships with the people I've met have gotten deeper and more satisfying.
